The Unknown Totem

The design experiment for this piece was to employ a primitive exploration of organic form and texture, imagining stone age forms set in an iron age material.

While the silicon bronze was used to connect the four individual pieces, I chose to highlight it as its own element, expanding it beyond the joints and up onto the surface of the steel, as if it were slowly enveloping the whole of the piece. Something new joining something very old.

This piece was mostly formed with a fly press, which is a human powered mechanism that employs the leverage of a specially designed screw and a large fly wheel to generate up to 6 tons of pressure.
